Wednesday Thoughts

Last night I watched the final table of the NAPT stop at the Mohegan Sun casino. Even though I knew than Vanessas Selbst had won I still like to see how the hands played out. The hands they showed certainly showed the aggressiveness of Vanessa and how she was constantly putting people to the test by putting them all in. Congratulations to her. I remember the last time Vanessa was on TV I was less than impressed with her attitude there . This time she seemed much more pleasant and that was a good thing. Hopefully she saw her last appearance on TV and learned from it.

I do have one other comment though. When she won there was no celebration and this is not a comment against her but I notice it more and more in major tournaments. Are we all so worried about being politically correct that we can't celebrate with a huge smile, a fist pump or something. Are we that worried about hurting the losers feelings that celebration is not allowed or frowned on. Cmon folks. If I somehow miraculously win a major tournament I am going to be celebrating. If people think it's in bad taste well so be it. I mean she won like $750,000. If I could do cartwheels at my advanced age I would. Let's not put poker down the path of complete boredom by barely cracking a smile when we win. Sure the other player is going to feel bad when they lose but like in all other sports (yes I classify poker as a sport) there are winners and losers. The losers have to learn to accept it. Too bad if they can't.

I am planning to play THE MOOKIE tonight on Full Tilt all being well. No last longer bets and no hockey game for distraction. There goes all my excuses.

Some thoughts on the Chicago/Vancouver series. A huge disappointment as I really thought there was only 1 good game. The others were lopsided one way or the other. The Hawks managed to stay healthy and the Canucks were seriously hurting on defense. Last night Salo was like at 40%. You could see the pain and then Edler got hit and was out before the end of the first period on a somewhat questionable hit. Of course Mitchell and Rome never played due to injury. That left there defense really suspect to Chicago's speedy forwards. Luongo didn't have a great series either. Of course the hand wringing starts now as how to be better for next year. Should be an interesting off season. I think Demitra will be gone for sure. I will be cheering for the Hawks over the Sharks as Chicago has a lot of Vancouver born on their team.

  1. I imagine that Luongo will take lots of heat with his longggggg contract beginning. He's fantastic when he is good, but when he isn't good ...

It looks like this series might force change. They have to find some way to get past the Hawks next year -- getting a guy like Big Buff, perhaps?

Yep Luongo will really need to reprove himself next year as we have an excellent goalie on our farm team (schroeder).

We need to improve our speed on defence too. that's a top priority.

  3. Yes, I noticed the same thing when I watched the show as well. I was expecting an attitude from Vanessa. Much better showing.

From my limited viewing of the Hawks/Canucks series I thought Luongo was left out on an island too much however when you have a top goalie, he is supposed to save your team when that occasionally happens. This is especially true when you are down 2 or 3 in the 3rd period and are having to press the attack. I thought the Canucks were starting to dominate the action in the last period and had scored one goal to close to 3-1 (and just missed that one off the crossbar or post during the penalty) and yet the first guy with a breakaway puts it past him and it's 4-1 then 5-1. Luongo has to make that stop I thought. But improving the defense is a definite must. Do you think the number of penalties the Canucks took was due to the speed of the Hawks being a lot greater than the Canucks?
As to Vanessa Selbst, I always thought she was a good player and then she acted like Phillipina Helmuth in that women's tourney and donked off her chips complaining all the way. I am sure she was embarassed to see that played out on TV where of course they can make you look even worse with the editing. I got the impression she thought as a pro she should walk all over the final table and when things didn't go quite her way, and her opponent did get a little lucky, she started channeling her inner Hellmuth and acted the ass. Glad she cleaned up her act at Mohegan Sun, of course it's a lot easier when you're winning.

The defenceman didn't do a good job of clearing the rebounds either. Luongo wasn't great but it certainly wasn't all his fault. Forwards wise our speed is excellent but yea we certainly need more speed on the back end
