Sunday Morning

Just sitting on my sofa her watching the second last event of the Olympics which is the mens 50 KM ski race. Great to watch and as I type this a Canadian is sitting in 4th place. Should be a good finish.

Of course we are all waiting for the final event the Gold Medal hockey game between the U. S. and Canada. It should be a classic. Even though I of course will be cheering madly for Canada we as fans are the winners. These Olympics have turned out to be a huge success. My oldest son managed to get tickets to the bronze medal game last night and said he will never forget the feeling of being there.

They just announced the flag bearer for Canada for the closing ceremonies and it seems it will be Joannie Rochette (pictured above) the figure skater who got a bronze medal. That of course wasn't the story. Her mom died suddenly just after arriving at the games. A lot of athletes would not have been able to continue but Joannie skated and somehow managed to skate brilliantly and with tears in her eyes took the bronze medal behind the great Korean and Japanese skaters. You couldn't help but get choked up watching her skate so its a great choice.

The Olympics

As you know the Olympics are on right now where I live and although I was a bit of a skeptic beforehand it has turned out to be tremendously successful with a few hiccupps.

The bad

1. The death of the Georgian bobsledder. It was terrible and I feel for his family but it was a tragic accident.

2. Lack of snow at one of the venues. It was a real concern but they managed to work around it. The funny thing was at Whistler where most of the snow events took place there was tons of snow.

The good

1.Lindsey Vonn winning the downhill. Boy can she ski and she sure looks great doing it.

2. Clara Hughes winning another medal for Canada in speed skating. She is the only athlete from any country to ever win More than one medal in both summer and winter Olympics. Her summer medals were in cycling. There have been a couple others win one medal in both but never multiple. On top of it what a great lady.

3. The skeleton win by Jon Montgomery (he is on Oprah today) and then walking through the Whistler Village drinking a jug of beer that was passed to him. That was a Canadian moment.

4. The cross country skiing. If you have never done it you might not realize how hard it is to go that fast. They are incredible athletes and deserve more funding.

5. Canada and US womens final. The two best women's teams meet again. Canada won but these teams are so even.

More to come this weekend

Hopefully I am back

Okay its been 4 months since my last post and that's unforgivable but a lot of things have happened since then. Some good, some not so good.

1. Still playing poker live 3 nights a week. My game I think has improved a lot in the last year and I am making better decisions. That's what this game is all about.

2. Still playing online at Pokerstars. I really hate the online game and really don't trust the random selection of cards and that's why I only play 1 dollar 45 player sitngoes. I just do it to pass time and am constantly amazed at the suckouts online and people calling with obscure cards and then straighting or flushing out. It's almost like they know whats coming. More on that later.

3. Had a bit of a health issue which seems to be under control. It was weird I had trouble swallowing food. Turns out my esophagus doesn't work properly. You know how they found that out. I had to swallow whole marshmallows while lying on a scan table without chewing them. Try doing that?? It was horrible but it did show the problem. I now have some great medication and everything seems to be back to normal. I had lost 17 pounds and being a runner I am pretty skinny anyways so that was pretty scary.

4. I booked a Vegas trip for June (first one this year) and I am going to play in one of the events leading up to the main event. Really looking forward to it. Only 1000 dollar buy in. I can't believe I just wrote that as 1000 is a lot of money.

5. Still was following a lot of my favourite blogs while I took a writing hiatus. you know who you are. Found a couple new ones too.

Good to be back
